Dance

Prerequisite: None.

Materials needed: shoes and costumes for dance performances. Beginning Dance is open to all students without previous dance experience. During this course students will learn basic dance alignment and movement, as well as basic technique in a variety of styles, as well as introduction to choreographic principles and elements of dance production. Students are required to dance in community and school performances each semester as these are considered part of the curriculum. Students may have costumes or supplies to purchase per year but these will be kept to a minimum. This is in addition to the Course Fee. Students are graded on attendance, participation, and performance.

Materials needed: shoes and costumes for dance performances. Open to all students with previous dance experience and successful fulfillment of Beginning Dance or passed audition. Students will work on fine-tuning technical dance skills in a variety of disciplines. Students will also continue to learn choreographic principles and elements of performance production. Students are required to dance in community and school performances each semester as these are considered part of the curriculum. Students may have costumes or supplies to purchase per year but these will be kept to a minimum. This is in addition to the Course Fee. Students are graded on attendance, participation, and performance.

Materials needed: shoes and costumes for dance performances. Open to all students with previous dance experience and successful fulfillment of Intermediate Dance or passing an audition. In Advanced Dance, students will continue to identify, demonstrate and apply structures, choreographic processes, forms, and principles. This class is about becoming a better choreographer. Students are required to dance in community and school performances as these are considered part of the curriculum. Students may have costumes or supplies to purchase per year but these will be kept to a minimum. This is in addition to the Course Fee. Students are graded on attendance, participation, and performance.

Materials needed: shoes and costumes for dance performances. Students who audition into Company Dance are technically proficient in ballet, modern, lyrical, and jazz technique. Students will use their advanced technical skills in performance and expand their choreographic skills to create meaningful, unique work for performance. Students will be given opportunities to be small group choreographers and audition for solo, duo, or trio dance numbers. Some out-of-school rehearsals and performances are required. Students may have costumes or supplies to purchase per year but these will be kept to a minimum. This is in addition to the Course Fee. Students are graded on attendance, participation, and performance.

Prerequisite: Company dance member and application selection. Interested dancers need to get an application from Ms. Handy: t.z.handy@maranausd.org.

Materials needed: shoes and costumes for dance performances. This course meets concurrently with a beginning dance class. Students will learn how to safely structure the progression of a dance class from warm-ups to locomotive exercises to center exercises. The student will also learn strategies for teaching different ages and ability levels of dancers. After completing written work concerning dance education, injury prevention, and dance psychology, the assistant will have the opportunity to structure and teach a dance unit to a beginning dance class. The dance assistant will choreograph a full-length piece for the class to perform in the Spring dance concert.
